Meet The Team: Taunglea Ambroise

Get to know our team member whose passion is hair education regardless of texture. To most of you she’s a familiar face at hair rules parties and functions. On a regular day she usually dashes in and out of the salon. Sometimes she’s there in the staff room, holding meetings and conference calls, and then she’s gone. She doesn't work on the floor so we don’t see her very often and yet she’s a very integral part of the hair rules operation. Anyone who has questions about products and how to retail them, and anywhere there is a need for the hair rules line from Chicago to Morocoo, she takes care of it and then some. Meet Taunglea Ambroise!  What is your official role at hair...

Transformation Tuesday: Angela

A busy nurse hides her perfectly healthy and beautiful hair in a wig Suzette, one of our stylists at hair rules, had a friend named Angela whom she invited to come and model for us. Suzette knew Angela had gorgeous hair, so it was such a surprise that when Angela came to see us, she had her hair under a wig. But Angela was ready for a change, and she trusted us to work our magic.  True enough, she had thick, beautiful and perfectly healthy hair. Her reason for wearing a wig is common to a lot of women who come to us for help—Angela didn’t know how to take care of her natural curls. We were only too happy...

If you’re a professional in the hair industry, it’s hard to weed out real innovation from the rubbish. Every now and then, it’s always a good idea for further education, or even a refresher course, to keep up with the game. But it’s even a better idea to get knowledge from fellow professionals or salon owners who have years of experience. After all, education is the foundation of healthy hair care! Recently at the Natural Hair Show in Philadelphia, our senior stylist, Jasmine, gave an hour-long talk about natural hair care among fellow...

Transformation Tuesday: Onjaya

hair rules participated at the Natural Hair Show in Philadelphia not too long ago, and it was such a pleasure not only to meet hair rules fans in the area, but also to reach out and spread the importance of natural hair care. Education is the foundation of healthy hair! A handful of women reached out and were willing to model for us at the show. One of them was Onjaya, a lovely young woman who wanted a cut (and she needed one) but didn’t want to go too short. Her hair was also on the dry side as most curls tend to be, but overall healthy. She was also at a loss styling-wise.  Lucky for her, Jasmine, our resident...

Black-Owned And Why It Matters

Feedback from your own community can sometimes be a challenge, to say the least. I’ll never forget in 2003 after authoring, “Hair Rules: The Ultimate Hair Care Guide for Women with Kinky, Curly or Wavy Hair,” I got some surprising feedback from a misinformed reviewer. “A. Dickey is a Caucasian hair stylist who prides himself on being able to do all hair types,” the woman wrote. “I agreed with many of his concepts. However, there are some things that don’t make good sense for our hair and its care and only someone who has experienced our problems firsthand can relate.” I’ve been the pale red head in a family of brown people all my life, so mistaking me for a white man wasn’t the...
